Individual Differences & Inclusive Education

Inclusive education
Inclusive education means educating all children — including those with disabilities and special needs — together in regular classrooms, with appropriate support, rather than segregating them.
Types of exceptional / special children:
| Category | Examples |
|---|---|
| Gifted / talented | Very high ability, creativity |
| Slow learners | Below-average pace, need extra time |
| Physically challenged | Visual, hearing, orthopaedic impairment |
| Learning disabled | Dyslexia (reading), Dysgraphia (writing), Dyscalculia (maths) |
| Socially/emotionally disturbed | Behavioural/adjustment problems |
Key principles: RTE Act 2009 promotes education for all; NEP 2020 stresses equity and inclusion. Barrier-free environment, IEP (Individualised Education Plan), and trained special educators support inclusion.
The three 'dys-' disabilities
These three are guaranteed marks if you never mix them up. The clue is in the second half of each word:
Exam tip: Dyslexia = reading, Dysgraphia = writing, Dyscalculia = mathematics. Inclusive education = regular classroom for all; special (segregated) schooling is the opposite approach.
