1857 in Rajasthan

In 1857 Rajputana had 22 princely states under the political control of A.G.G. (Agent to the Governor-General) George Patrick Lawrence, headquartered at Ajmer. There were six military cantonments: Nasirabad, Nimach, Erinpura, Deoli, Beawar and Kherwara.

Crucially, the rulers sided with the British while the sepoys rebelled — the revolt here was a soldiers' and commoners' rising, not a princely one.

Key figures:

• Nasirabad (28 May 1857) — the first outbreak in Rajasthan.
• Auwa (Pali) — the strongest centre of resistance. Thakur Khushal Singh of Auwa defeated the British force; the Political Agent Monck Mason was killed here.
• Tantya Tope entered Rajasthan and sustained the struggle into 1858–59.
• Lasani Sant and the Kotah rising (where the sepoys held the city against the Maharao) are also commonly asked.

Integration: the seven stages

After 1947, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and V.P. Menon merged 22 princely states into one Rajasthan in seven stages over roughly eight years. Learning the first, the biggest and the last is the highest-value use of your time.
