Two professional musician communities to distinguish:

  • Langas — patronised largely by Muslim Sindhi Sipahis; associated with the sarangi and nad.
  • Manganiyars — patronised by Rajput families; associated with the kamayacha and khartal.

Folk deities and khyal

  • Pabuji — the Pabuji ki Phad is sung to the ravanhatha.
  • Baba Ramdev — Ramdevra (Jaisalmer); the Terah Taali is performed for him.
  • Gogaji, Tejaji, Devnarayan are the other major folk deities.
  • Khyal is Rajasthan's folk theatre form (Kuchamani, Shekhawati, Turra-Kalangi).
