Rajasthan Polity & Economy

Two halves: the constitutional machinery of the state, and its economy. The polity half is highly predictable — the same offices, the same numbers, the same "who appoints whom" questions every year. So don't read this page. Work through it. Every block below asks you to commit to an answer first.

Panchayati Raj — Rajasthan's claim to fame

Rajasthan was the first state in India to implement Panchayati Raj, inaugurated by Pandit Nehru at Nagaur on 2 October 1959. This is the single most-asked fact in the whole topic.

Build the three tiers from the bottom up:

The structure was recommended by the Balwant Rai Mehta Committee, and the 73rd Constitutional Amendment (1992) gave Panchayati Raj constitutional status nationally.

State institutions

  • Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC) — at Ajmer, established 1949. It conducts this very exam.
  • State Human Rights Commission, State Election Commission and State Information Commission — Jaipur.
  • Lokayukta — investigates complaints against public functionaries.

The economy

Rajasthan's economy rests on three legs: agriculture (the largest employer), minerals (its real comparative advantage), and tourism.

Sort each place into what it is actually known for — this is exactly how the exam frames it:

Minerals — the state's strong suit

  • Zinc and lead — Rajasthan is essentially India's sole producer. Zawar (Udaipur) is the historic zinc mine.
  • MarbleMakrana (Nagaur), used in the Taj Mahal.
  • CopperKhetri (Jhunjhunu), the "Copper City".
  • Gypsum, rock phosphate and silver — Rajasthan leads nationally.

Agriculture and industry

  • Bajra, mustard, guar and barley — Rajasthan leads India in these; mustard production is the highest of any state.
  • The Indira Gandhi Canal transformed farming in the north-west.
  • Rabi (wheat, mustard, gram) and kharif (bajra, jowar, guar) seasons.
  • Textiles, cement, marble processing and handicrafts dominate industry.
